Most of you have already begun to hear that change is in the air. Our School Board has reviewed the data, read guidelines, listened to concerned families, and has made the decision to move our schools to masking optional settings beginning February 21, 2022. The motion made by the Board is not intended to override any CDC directions and face masks are encouraged while community transmission levels remain high and substantial.
Due to a power outage that is expected to take time to fix, there will be no school for students at Swain Middle School and Bright Adventures PreK today, Friday May 27th. Swain High School, and East and West Elementary Schools will still be on a 2 Hour delayed schedule. Thank you.
Positive Covid-19 numbers will be posted here each week. Please click the article headline to view these numbers.
At approximately 7:45 this morning a teacher at East Elementary School was notified by a student of a potential gun in another student’s backpack. The teacher opened the backpack and saw what she believed to be a handgun. The teacher immediately notified East Elementary Principal Amanda Sutton who secured the bag and placed the school on lockdown. Our School Resource Officer then took the bag, and upon initial observation believed it to be a handgun. Once he took it out of the backpack, he discovered that it was an airsoft gun. At this time, with the airsoft gun secured, there was no further threat and the lockdown, and perimeter lockdown of our Swain County Schools, was lifted and all activities have returned to normal. The investigation into the incident by Swain County Schools is ongoing at this time.
This morning we were notified of a potential threat at East Elementary School. All schools were put on perimeter lockdown. As of now, the immediate threat has been resolved. East Elementary remains on a perimeter lockdown. The perimeter lockdown has been lifted from west elementary, middle and high school. School personnel along with emergency personnel will continue to monitor the situation.
As soon as we have more information, we will communicate it through all channels.
